Into Great Britain by Air
A plain explanation of the rules that decide whether your dog travels in the cabin or in the hold, written by a commercial pilot rather than copied from a competitor.
Cargo is the default, not a choice the airline made
People often assume an airline is being awkward when it insists a dog travels as freight. It is usually the law. Pets entering Great Britain by air must generally be moved as manifest cargo, checked and cleared at an animal reception centre. The carrier is enforcing a requirement, not a policy.
The two exceptions that matter
Recognised assistance dogs travelling with their handler, and pets arriving on qualifying chartered private aircraft. The second is why private charter comes up in almost every conversation about a dog flying into the UK in the cabin.
Carrier approval, in law
The Non-Commercial Movement of Pet Animals Order 2011 requires a carrier moving a pet into Great Britain to be approved by the appropriate authority. Movements from the Republic of Ireland are excepted, as are recognised assistance dogs on UK or EU air carriers. APHA publishes the approved lists, including approved charter airlines, and updates them regularly — which is precisely why nobody should quote an approval from memory.
The documents and the timing
Microchip, valid rabies vaccination, the correct travel document, and for dogs from most countries an approved tapeworm treatment containing praziquantel administered 24 to 120 hours before arrival. Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Malta and Norway are exempt from the tapeworm requirement. Get the vet appointment in the diary before you book the flight.
Commercial movements are a different regime
Selling, rehoming or otherwise moving an animal commercially triggers different and stricter requirements than a pet travelling with its owner. Tell your vet and whoever arranges the flight what the journey actually is. Getting this wrong is treated seriously.

Common questions
Do all pets flying into Great Britain travel as cargo?
Most do. The recognised exceptions are assistance dogs and pets arriving on qualifying chartered private aircraft.
Which airports can my dog arrive at?
It depends on the approved route and the operator's approval, not simply on which airports have handling. It is checked per enquiry rather than assumed.
Does my dog need tapeworm treatment?
