Transparent, and explained

Private Jet
Prices UK

How much a private jet costs in the UK depends on flying time, the aircraft, and a list of operational costs that most charter websites leave out. Here is our rate, the arithmetic, and what it does not cover.

Indicative flying rate

£6,500 / airborne hour

Flying charge only. Airport charges, handling, positioning, catering and other operational costs are additional.

How private jet charter cost is calculated

Estimated airborne time multiplied by the flying rate gives the aircraft flying charge. Airborne time is modelled from the great-circle distance at a representative cruise of Mach 0.85 (about 487 kt) plus an 18-minute allowance for climb and descent.

That figure is deliberately a flying charge and nothing more. Quoting an all-in number without knowing your airports, dates and passenger count would be a guess dressed up as a price.

The variables

What actually
moves the price

Four things account for most of the gap between an indicative figure and a real quote. None of them are hidden — they are just rarely explained.

1. Positioning, and whether the aircraft can stay

This is the biggest one and the least understood. At popular airports in season — Ibiza, Mykonos, Olbia, Nice during an event, Geneva at winter weekends — there is often no overnight parking. The aircraft drops you, repositions empty to another airport, and returns for your pickup. Those empty legs are flying time and they appear in the price. A three-night trip to Ibiza in August can cost more than the two sectors you actually sit on.

Where the aircraft is starting from matters too. If it is already in the UK, you pay for your sectors. If it has to come from elsewhere to collect you, that flying is chargeable as well.

2. Fuel prices

Jet fuel is a large share of the direct operating cost of any flight, and the price moves — with crude, with refining margins, with exchange rates, and considerably between airports. The same sector can cost noticeably more or less month to month for no other reason. Our published hourly rate is reviewed against fuel costs and is indicative rather than fixed for all time; the rate confirmed at quotation is the one that applies to your trip.

3. Peak dates

Demand is not evenly spread. Summer Fridays and Sundays to the Balearics, ski-season weekends into Geneva, Grand Prix week in Nice, the fashion weeks in Milan. On those dates aircraft, slots and parking are all scarce at once, and prices reflect it. Moving a day either way often changes the number more than changing aircraft would.

4. Airport and handling charges

Landing, handling, parking and passenger charges vary enormously between airports and are billed on top of the flying charge. Two airports serving the same city can differ substantially, which is one of the reasons the departure airport is worth a conversation rather than an assumption.

Clarity

What the flying
charge covers

Included in the flying charge

  • The aircraft for your trip
  • Two pilots
  • Fuel for the sectors flown
  • Standard aircraft insurance
  • Routine flight planning and dispatch

Not included

  • Aircraft positioning to and from your departure airport
  • Airport, handling and landing fees
  • Parking and overnight aircraft charges
  • Passenger taxes and duties where applicable
  • Catering and ground transport
  • De-icing
  • Crew overnight costs
  • Permits and international handling

Most charter websites quote an hourly rate and leave this list unwritten. It is the difference between an indicative figure and the number on your invoice, so it is set out plainly here.

Common questions

Private jet
cost questions

How much does private jet hire cost in the UK?

Our indicative flying rate is £6,500 per airborne hour. A London to Nice sector at 1 hr 25 min estimated airborne time works out at approximately £9,500 as a flying charge, before airport, handling, positioning and catering costs.

What is not included in the hourly rate?

Aircraft positioning, airport and handling charges, landing fees, parking, passenger taxes where applicable, catering, ground transport, de-icing, crew overnight costs and permits.

Why does a one-way sometimes cost close to a return?

Because the aircraft has to get home. If it is not carrying you on the return leg it repositions empty, and that flying time still has to be paid for by someone. On a return trip you are aboard for both legs, which is why returns often look better value per hour flown.

Why can a three-night trip cost more than a same-day return?

Because at busy airports in season there is often no overnight parking. The aircraft drops you, repositions empty to another airport and returns to collect you, and that repositioning is chargeable flying time. A same-day return uses the same two sectors with nobody paying for empty legs.

Do fuel prices affect private jet charter cost?

Yes, significantly. Jet fuel is a large share of the direct operating cost and its price moves with crude, refining margins, exchange rates and the airport itself. Our hourly rate is reviewed against fuel costs and is indicative rather than fixed; the rate confirmed at quotation applies to your trip.

Are private jet empty legs cheaper?

Usually significantly, because the aircraft is repositioning anyway. The trade-off is that the date and route are fixed and notice is short.

How many passengers can a Citation X carry?

Eight in the double-club cabin, plus a ninth belted seat on the lavatory if the party needs it — normally kept free for a cabin attendant.
